Chestnut-sided Warbler (Dendroica pensylvanica), Tohono Chul Park, Tucson, Pima County

This 1st-year-female Chestnut-sided Warbler was found and photographed by Philip Kline in Tohono Chul Park in NW Tucson on 7 January 2009. It was in a large honeysuckle in the Children's Garden and was loosely associating with an orange-crowned warbler.

Chestnut-sided Warbler is a casual transient and winter visitor to Arizona, but this is the third one photographed this winter.

Even when it completely lacks any Chestnut on the sides, nonbreeding Chestnut-sided Warbler is a distinctive bright yellow-green above and unstreaked grayish-white below. It also has wingbars and an eyering. No other warbler has this combination of features. First year female based on lack of visible chestnut on sides, but may be obscured by branches.
