Welcome to Arizona Field Ornithologists (AZFO).
AZFO is an open and inclusive organization committed to taking steps that will encourage and support greater and diverse participation. In our efforts to learn about Arizona birds, we will work to ensure that the outdoors – and the joy of birds – is safe, inclusive, and accessible for all.
In 2005, AZFO was founded by ornithologists who believed that Arizona, a premier ornithological destination, should have an active ornithological organization to support and encourage the study and knowledge of Arizona's birds. Our mission:
AZFO is an organization of birders and ornithologists dedicated to increasing the knowledge of the identification, status, and distribution of Arizona’s birdlife.
To support our mission statement, we organize many projects and programs:
Arizona Birds. Our peer-reviewed, online journal carries many informative articles.
A Photo Documentation Site. This popular site provides a user-friendly way of documenting many of Arizona's rarest species. Each page also has useful status and distribution information. The photo documentation project has increased AZFO collaboration with the Arizona Bird Committee (ABC).
Sound Recording Library. AZFO also has a sound recording library, which offers hundreds of recordings for personal and educational use.
Gale Monson Research Grant. AZFO also sponsors annual grants that offer financial support for conducting field research that will advance our knowledge of Arizona bird life.
Annual Meetings. Our meetings provide an opportunity for AZFO members and supporters to share experiences, network and learn about past and current ornithological field projects in the state.
AZFO Expedition, Workshops and Sponsored Events. Field expeditions are organized with the goal of data-gathering typically in locations of little-known or underbirded areas where a seasonal status is incomplete. Workshops are held at the annual meeting and during each year throughout various parts of the state. The AZFO helps coordinate, contribute, and publish data from annual organized citizen-science based survey efforts, which include: Christmas Bird Counts, Global Big Day, Greater Phoenix Area Waterbird Survey, and the Santa Cruz Flats Raptor Count.
County Checklists. AZFO volunteers provide updated bird checklists (by county) at no cost for birders to use while exploring bird life in Arizona - just download and print.
AZ eBird Gaps. A new project designed for AZFO members to expand their efforts to actively take part in exploring Arizona bird life.
We are looking for people from around the state. Become an active member or financial supporter. Please join AZFO today!
