Little Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea), Gilbert Water Ranch, Maricopa County

This adult Little Blue Heron was was discovered by Brendon Grice and photographed by Brendon and by Michael Moore on 15 May 2009.

Little Blue Heron is a casual visitor to southern Arizona, mostly in spring and summer.

Sometimes confused with immature Reddish Egret.  This is an adult bird because of the head and back plumes.  Adult Reddish Egret has thicker, redder, shaggier neck and a pink and black bill.  The strongly bicolored, gray and black bill is another good mark for Little Blue Heron.
