Red Phalarope (Phalaropus fulicarius), Kennedy Park, Tucson, Pima County

Discovered by Janine McCabe on 23 May 2009 and photographed the same day by Jay Hand.

Casual transient at ponds and lakes in SE AZ, chiefly in the fall, but also in every month except March.  It is unusual to see this species in alternate plumage in Arizona, let alone in spring.

This appears to be a male based on relative dullness of rufous coloration, plus streakiness of crown, buffiness of back and lack of crisp edges of white cheek.
