Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus), Veteran's Oasis Park, Chandler, Maricopa County

These three Whimbrels were discovered and  photographed by Scott Frye on 09 May 2009 at Veteran's Oasis Park in Chandler.

Casual migrant in Maricopa County. More often found in western part of the county.  Extremely rare in the eastern part of the county. This species is a regular migrant in the Lower Colorado River Valley and is somewhat regularly found at Willcox ponds. Outside of those areas, it is very rare.

Striped head and shorter, less curved bill separate this species from Long-billed Curlew.
