Five-striped Sparrow (Aimophila quinquestriata), Florida Canyon, Pima County

This Five-striped Sparrow was reported by Melody Kehl on 15 June 2009 and photographed by Alan Schemierer on 19 June 2009.

Although the first US record for Five-striped Sparrow was in Pima County at Proctor Road in Madera Canyon, there have only been a couple of county records since then outside of a small population in Baboquivari Canyon on the Tohono O'odham Reservation.  Until the discovery last year of the Rufous-capped Warblers, Florida Canyon was not often visited and seems to be potentially very good habitat for Five-striped Sparrows as well.  It may therefore be more regular here than current records indicate and should be looked for.
