Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo platypterus), Peppersauce Canyon, Pinal CountyThis Broad-winged Hawk was photographed by Bob Bowers on 26 September 2009
on a Tucson Audubon Society field trip led by Doug Jenness.
Broad-winged Hawk is a casual transient in SE Arizona with around 20 accepted
records statewide. Face pattern with pale cheek, dark malar,
and pale supercilium are characteristic of Broad-winged Hawks. Short tail eliminates accipiters. Also tail too short,
relative to wing tips, to be a Red-shouldered Hawk. A young Gray Hawk would have a much bolder and contrasting face, narrower barring, and a black eye. A Red-tailed wouldn't show the underpart pattern of horizontal streaks. Young Short-tailed Hawks show no barring on the underparts and are buffy below, not white
