Dickcissel (Spiza americana), South Of Christopher Columbus Park, Pima County

A Dickcissel was discovered at this location by Jake Mohlmann  on 23 September 2009.  Two birds were present and photographed by Robert Payne on 26 September 2009.  They were found at the recharge basin on the west bank of the Santa Cruz River just south of Christopher Columbus Park this AM. They were in the large mesquite that overhangs the trail just east of the more northern of the 2 recharge basins.  One was also photographed by Jerome Smith on 04 October 2009.

Dickcissel is a rare fall migrant to Arizona.  It has been widely reported this year, as it was last year, so perhaps it is increasing.

In this plumage it is easily told by the yellow of the face and breast.
