Rufous-backed Robin (Turdus rufopalliatus), Green Valley, Pima County
This Rufous-backed Robin was discovered and photographed by Laurens Halsey on 12
October 2009 at a backyard water treatment in a neighborhood along a wash. Wash and much of neighborhood
is native desert thorn scrub; several large mesquites, ornamentals (with fruit), and non-native desert plants in yards. A few backyard water treatments and fewer swimming pools are the only water sources; the nearest known golf course pond is several miles away. Rare but regular winter visitor, usually seen October to early April. Rufous back and wing coverts, long throat streaks separate it easily from
American Robin.
