Greater Scaup (Aythya marila), Sahuaro Lake, Maricopa County

This Greater Scaup was discovered and photographed by Tommy DeBardeleben on 13 January 2010 on Saguaro Lake at the Butcher Jones Recreation Area. 

Rare transient and winter visitor away from the Lower Colorado River where it is regular in good numbers in the winter.  This is probably the same bird returning from last year.

This bird has a very rounded head and was larger than the Lesser Scaup it was with.
