Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo platypterus), Mesa, Maricopa County

This adult Broad-winged Hawk was photographed by Jay Miller on 16 April 2010 near his house in Mesa.

Formerly an accidental migrant in Maricopa County, but perhaps increasing in recent years throughout the western US.

Small Buteo with rufous barring below, broad black and white bands on the tail, fairly pointed wings and a light under wing with dark border.
