Horned Grebe (Podiceps auritus), Upper Lake Mary, Coconino County

This Horned Grebe was photographed by Eric Hough on 07 November 2010.  This is possibly the same bird first found at this location on 14 October 2010, by Zack Zdinak, Terry Blows, and eight others from Prescott Audubon.

Rare migrant and winter visitor.

The contrast between dark cap and white cheeks is well-defined. This bird also shows the peak of the crest at the back of the head and a white tip to the bill, which can also be good field marks for separating Horned from Eared Grebe.
