Least Grebe (Tachybaptus dominicus), Pena Blanca Lake, below Upper Thumb Rock Picnic area, Santa Cruz County

This family of Least Grebes consisting of one adult and 4 juveniles was photographed by Alan Schmierer on 02 November 2010.

A pair of Least Grebes were reported at this location during the summer and nest building was reported.  These photographs further document the breeding of this species at this location.  Monson and Phillips (1981) indicate two possible previous breeding records: Mittry Lake in 1951 and west of the Tumacacori Mountains in 1964.  However, the only evidence of breeding they cite is a large number of individuals present (15 and 7 respectively) with no further details.  Therefore, Least Grebes may have previously bred in the state, but this is the best substantiated breeding record.

Tiny gray grebe with black face, yellow eyes and small, black bill.  Good comparison with Pied-billed Grebe in first photo.
