Black-throated Green Warbler (Dendroica virens), Santa Cruz River 1km south of Tubac Bridge, Santa Cruz County

This Black-throated Green Warbler was discovered by Chris McCreedy and Michael Lester on 20 November 2010 and photographed by Chris McCreedy on 27 November 2010

Prior to 1990 there were about 30 records for Arizona, but it has been much scarcer since with fewer than 10 records. This pattern of decreased occurrence since 1990 seems to fit several other northerly breeding eastern warblers that are much less common as vagrants to the state than previously. However, in the past couple of years it seems that the number of records of this species may be increasing.

Yellow vent, broad black upper chest, side flanks, two-toned face, yellow with mustard cheeks.
