Black-chinned X Anna's Hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri X Calypte anna ), Flagstaff, AZ, Coconino County

This Black-chinned X Anna's Hummingbird was photographed by Jason Wilder on 15 April 2011 at his backyard feeder.

Hybrids between Black-chinned and Anna's hummingbirds are very poorly documented and occur with unknown frequency.

This bird has many characteristics somewhat intermediate between Anna's and black-chinned hummingbirds. Structurally the bird suggests an Anna's with its not-terribly-long-billed appearance and somewhat stocky build. Plumage on the head and throat is superficially similar to black-chinned, with a green head, white spot behind eye, and purplish gorget underneath. The color and shape of the gorget appears somewhat intermediate between black-chinned and Anna's. The dingy green plumage on the underside of the bird is suggestive of Anna's hummingbird. The song of this bird, heard on several occasions, is not noticeably different from Anna's hummingbird.
