Little Blue Heron (Egretta caerulea), Tres Rios Hayfield site, Maricopa County

This Little Blue Heron was photographed by Melanie Herring on 08 May 2011

Little Blue Heron is a casual spring and summer visitor. Most Maricopa County records are from May and mid-July to mid-August.

The only other all dark heron is the larger Reddish Egret.  Adult Reddish Egret has thicker, redder, shaggier neck and a pink and black bill.  Immature Reddish Egret is more concolor and lacks the strongly bicolored, gray and black bill.
