Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus), North shore of Mormon Lake, Coconino County

This Whimbrel was discovered by Tom Linda and Chuck Larue and photographed by Tom Linda on 30 March 2011. Bird on the right is a Willet. 

Rare transient statewide except in the Lower Colorado River Valley where is it uncommon.  More frequent in spring.  Exttremely rare in Flagstaff area with no records for at least a decade. 

Dark line through the eye, light stripe above the eye then dark. Also light medium crown stripe. Bill shape of a Whimbrel. Lacks warm cinnamon-brown color of a Long-billed Curlew.
