White-rumped Sandpiper (Calidris fuscicollis), "Lake Cochise" at Willcox, Cochise County

These adult White-rumped Sandpipers were first found at Willcox on 01 June 2011 by Roger Eastman and were photographed by Dave Stejskal on 02 June 2011.

White-rumped Sandpiper is a casual late Spring migrant to the state.  There are 10 previously accepted records with one additional report pending with the Arizona Bird Committee.   The vast majority of the records have come from Willcox.

White-rumped Sandpiper is a large "peep" with black legs and very long wings, recalling the shape of Baird's Sandpiper, which is similarly long-winged. The combination of finely streaked breast, relatively long tapered bill, black legs, long wings, and rusty edges to the crown, back, and wing feathers make the identification of this species fairly straightforward at this season.
