Lucifer Hummingbird (Calothorax lucifer), Upper Madera Canyon, Pima County

This Lucifer Hummingbird was photographed by Laurens Halsey on 11 July 2011 at the Chuparosa B&B in Madera Canyon. Though previously observed, it was unreported.

This species is considered accidental in Madera Canyon with very few documented sightings. It is rare everywhere in AZ away from the east slope of the Huachuca Mountain where it is a regular summer visitor.

Note proportionately long down-arching bill, extended (and jagged) gorget. Not visible in this photograph - the wingtips fall short of the end of tail and the long tail is held closed.
