Short-billed Dowitcher (Limnodromus griseus), Mohave Valley, Mohave County

This Short-billed Dowitcher was photographed by Lauren Harter on 27 August 2011

These photos show five of the 43 Short-billed Dowitchers found by Lauren Harter and David Vander Pluym in the Mohave Valley area 27 August and were photographed by Lauren Harter on 27 August 2011.

Normally an uncommon to rare fall migrant in Arizona, Short-billed Dowitchers have been found in greater than usual numbers throughout the state this fall.

On these juveniles (indicated by uniform rufous edging on upperparts), the main ID point is the rufous barring and other internal markings on the otherwise dark tertials. Overall brightly marked covers and scapulars, and reddish wash on the breast are also good for Short-billed Dowitcher.
