Horned Grebe (Podiceps auritus), Fountain Hills Lake, Maricopa County

This Horned Grebe, first found by Troy Corman and Joey Alsadi on 11 November 2011, was photographed by Pierre Deviche on 14 November 2011.

A rare transient and winter visitor, with numbers increasing in recent years.

This grebe has a thicker bill than that of the Eared Grebe, a thicker neck, and a different head shape – square rather than round.
