Pacific Loon (Gravia pacifica), Granite Reef Recreation Site, Salt River, Maricopa County

This Pacific Loon was photographed by Tommy DeBardeleben on 12 November 2011. It was first discovered by Chris McCreedy on 9 November, 2011.

Rare but annual in the state. In Maricopa County, a casual fall transient and winter visitor; about a dozen previous records for the county.

This is an adult Pacific Loon in winter plumage Good field marks are the dark back (darker than other loons), lack of white around the eye, and the dark “necklace on the neck.
