Short-billed Dowitcher (Limnodromus griseus), Glendale Recharge Ponds, Maricopa County
This juvenile Short-billed Dowitcher was discovered by Melanie
Herring and Tommy DeBardeleben on 10 October 2011 at
the Glendale Recharge Ponds, where it was photographed
by Tommy DeBardeleben.
Rare transient throughout Arizona, where fall migration offers the
best chances of observing this species. They pass
through from mid-August to mid-October. This year has
been an exceptional year overall in Arizona for this
species.
Juvenile bird. A lot of white on the tail, very brightly colored on
the back, with bright rufous-buff or "tiger-striped
tertails" which is distinctive for juvenile Short-billed
