Red-necked Grebe (Podiceps grisegena), Gillespie Dam, Maricopa CountyThis Red-necked Grebe was photographed by Tommy DeBardeleben on 29 December 2011 This Red-necked Grebe was discovered by Troy Corman and Jay Miller while scouting for the Gila River CBC on 26 December 2011.
It was photographed by Tommy DeBardeleben on 29 December. This grebe is considered primarily a casual fall and winter visitor in Arizona with most records from the larger reservoirs along the Colorado River. However in recent years one or more have been found annually in the state. Very few records for Maricopa County.
Long yellowish bill, dark cap contrasting with whitish cheek and grayish neck are distinctive features.
