Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata), Sedona, Coconino County

These Mandarin Ducks (Aix galericulata) were photographed by Edward Homan on 03 January 2012 on Oak Creek near L'Auberge de Sedona.

Because of its ornamental beauty, Mandarin Duck (normally found in east Asia) is frequently kept and bred in captivity by duck fanciers. It is therefore not uncommon to see escaped or intentionally released birds in the wild. Mandarins have been present for several years on this section of Oak Creek and have also been seen at other sites in the Verde Valley (especially Lake Montezuma).

The origin of these birds is unknown. Someone along the creek may just like Mandarins and may have intentionally released them there. However, escaped Manadrins established a breeding population in England many years ago and have now done so in Ireland, France and Switzerland as well. Oak Creek seems like good habitat for this species, so it would be very interesting to know if they are breeding (they usually nest in holes in trees like Wood Ducks). The presence of a pair at least suggests it is possible!
