Horned Grebe (Podiceps auritus), Saguaro Lake, Maricopa County

This Horned Grebe was photographed by Tommy DeBardeleben on 02 November 2012

These five Horned Grebes were discovered by Susan Fishburn, Babs Buck, Lois Lorenz, and Tommy DeBardeleben on 02 November 2012 at Saguaro Lake adjacent to Butcher Jones Beach. They were photographed by Tommy DeBardeleben the same day.

Horned Grebes are rare but annual in Arizona, but numbers are increasing in recent years.

White cheeks and neck contrasting with dark cap separate this small grebe from Eared.
