Common Redpoll (Acanthis flammea), House Rock Valley, Coconino County

This Common Redpoll was discovered and photographed by Shaun Putz on 16 February 2012.

This is a potential first state record.  Shaun writes about his discovery:

"I was working in House Rock Valley around the Condor Viewing area and while driving north around midday I flushed a flock of finches that were feeding on the edge of the road. One caught my attention so I stopped. On the fence there were 20 American Goldfinches and one Common Redpoll ... The birds flushed after a coworker arrived and observed the bird. I checked at 1600 but could not find any birds. The location is 1.5 miles north of the Condor Viewing Area along House Rock Valley Rd. This is between Jacob Lake and Cliffdwellers on Hwy 89A.

Small streaked finch with a small pointed bill, two white wing bars, black chin, and red forhead.
