Lapland Longspur (Calcarius lapponicus), Reservation Tank, Coconino County

This Lapland Longspur was discovered and photographed by Jason Wilder on 01 March 2012

Lapland Longspur is a casual migrant and winter visitor in Arizona with fewer than 20 accepted records.

The cattle tanks of eastern Coconino County are hosting several Lapland Longspurs this winter (2011 - 2012). Two individuals have been reported at Babbitt Tank (~2 miles distant) since November, 2011. This represents a third individual, with plumage that is distinct from the two that continue at Babbitt Tank.

Strong facial pattern with black frame to auriculars, buffy supercilium, pinkish bill, streaky flanks (center bird below).
