McCown's Longspur (Calcarius mccownii), Santa Cruz Flats, Evergreen Sod Farm, Pinal County

McCown's Longspur was first reported at this location on 26 November 2012 by Richard Fray and there have been subsequent reports of up to 17 in a single flock.  This individual was photographed by Pierre Deviche on 28 January 2012.  It was foraging with several conspecifics and Horned Larks.

Formerly regular in small numbers in the Sulfur Springs and San Rafael Valleys of SE Arizona, this species appears to have decreased in recent years.

Typical longspur size, shape, & behavior; Feeds on short grass in the open; Overall plain-looking bird; Large pinkish bill; Plain face lacks contrasty auriculars; Pale supercilium; Short-tailed.
