Black-capped Gnatcatcher (Polioptila nigriceps), Chino Canyon, Santa Cruz County

This Black-capped Gnatcatcher was discovered and photographed by Jason Wilder on 08 July 2012.  A family of four individuals was seen in Chino Canyon, including an adult male and female, and two juveniles. Two pictures of the adult male and two pictures of a juvenile are included. In addition to watching the parents feed the young birds, a copulation attempt between the adults was observed.

Black-capped Gnatcatcher has been an extremely rare resident in SE Arizona. Historically, influxes of this species from Mexico have occurred sporadically and have persisted for a few years afterwards, followed by several years with no records.

In the male, the black cap and white outer tail feathers eliminate all other North American gnatcachers.  The graduated white outer tail feathers eliminate other gnatcatchers for the immatures as well.   These birds were also giving the diagnostic call.
