Black-hooded Parakeet or Nanday Parakeet (Nandayus nenday, ASU Research Park, Tempe, Maricopa County

These Black-hooded Parakeets or Nanday Parakeets (Nandayus nenday) were part of a flock of four discovered by Keith Story, Lindsay Story and Dick Graham on 02 September 2012.  They were photographed by Keith Story at the same time.

A small population of Black-hooded Parakeets has lived at the ASU Research Park for several years now. Kim Baker posted photos of these birds on the AZFO site in December 2006 and again in October 2009. The bird is native to Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. Florida and California have established populations.  It is worth tracking their population in Arizona since it is possible they could become established here some day.

As the name implies, black covers much of the head. Bright green feathers are set off by red at the top of the legs, a muted turquoise chest patch, and blackish flight feathers & tail with turquoise inserts. The bird is 12€ in length.
