Black Scoter (Melanitta nigra), Scotts Reservoir in Lakeside, Navajo County

This Black Scoter was discovered and photographed by Eric Hough on 17 October 2012

Rare and perhaps increasing migrant and winter visitor.  About 20 accepted records with others pending.  First potential record of this species for Navajo County.

The bird appeared to be an adult female, with black-ish coloration overall and dark cap that sharply contrasted with the white-cream colored face. The bill was more slender than a Ruddy Duck's would be and the bird was larger and longer-bodied than that of a Ruddy Duck. It continuously dove while swimming. It appeared to be slightly smaller bodied than nearby Mallards, Common Mergansers, and American Wigeons.
