Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus), Lake Cochise, Cochise County

A Whimbrel was first reported 16 September 2012 by Michael Lester.  It was photographed on 24 September 2012 by Laurens Halsey, Andrew Core and Arlene Ripley.

Rare migrant (usually spring), except in the Lower Colorado River Valley where it is considered uncommon.

Striped head (dark eye-stripe, white supercillium, dark lateral crown stripes, & white median crown stripe), gray-brown tones overall versus cinnamon tones of Long-billed Curlew, and the not as impressive curved bill.
