Downy Woodpecker (Latin Name), Hassayampa River Perserve, Maricopa County

This Downy Woodpecker was apparently found by an unknown observer about a week before it was photographed by Dominic Sherony on 20 March 2013.

Accidental in Maricopa County.  Only one previous county record listed in Witzeman, 1997, "Birds of Phoenix and Maricopa County".

The photographs are diagnostic. Harry Woodpecker is easily ruled out by the shorter bill of this bird, the large white tuft over the bill, and the short black mark on the shoulder, all relative to Hairy Woodpecker.
