Rough-legged Hawk (Buteo lagopus), Appx 6 miles SE of Vaca Corral San Rafael Valley, Santa Cruz County

This Rough-legged Hawk was discovered and photographed by Christie Van Cleve on 13 January 2013.

Very rare in southern Arizona in winter.

Perhaps the most variably plumaged hawk.  This individual shows enough of the black wrist marks and the long white tail with broad subterminal band to be identifiable.
