Common Black-Hawk (Buteogallus anthracinus), Rose Canyon Lake, Pima CountyThis Common Black-Hawk was discovered and photographed by Gary Woods on 08 August 2013. A fisherman stated that the bird had been there all summer and was seen catching a trout. Extraordinary at 7,000' elevation Could be confused with Zone-tailed Hawk. However, the tail
bands on Zone-tailed Hawk are gray from above, not white. In
addition this bird has an orange base to the bill (all dark in
Zone-tailed), an orange cere (bright yellow in Zone-tailed) and
yellowish lores (white in Zone-tailed).
