Black Scoter (Melanitta nigra), Lake Havasu, Mohave CountyThese Black Scoters were photographed by Tommy DeBardeleban on 01 December 2013
and by Lauren Harter on 05 December 2013. Gordon Karre writes "Black Scoter is listed as a review species by ABC. (2 females observed) We had heard reports that some were seen on Lake Havasu, and with the benefit of Tommy DeBardeleban's spotting scope we were able to make a positive ID as they were quite a distance from the shore. Although distant, Tommy also managed to capture a photo with one of them visible. Due to rather heavy swells, both birds were not always visible at the same time. Mark Ochs was also part of our group viewing and observing these birds. According to IUCN this species is listed as near threatened. It breeds in the far north in tundra regions and is a rare bird in the interior in winter." One female type was possibly a continuing bird, while
the other is a new bird. ~20 records for the state, but
increasing, primarily along the Colorado River. In this photo note the large size compared to the
coots as well as the dark brown body plumage and
contrasting paler cheek patch and throat. 01 December 2013, photo by Tommy DeBardeleban 05 December 2013, photo by Lauren Harter All photos are copyrighted© by photographer |
