Varied Thrush (Ixoreus naevius), Petrified Forest National Park, Navajo County

This Varied Thrush was found by Trevor Hinckley on 27 November 2014 and photographed by Eric Hough on 29 November at the Rainbow Forest Museum at Petrified Forest NP.

Rare migrant and winter visitor throughout much of the state, but there are very few records for northeastern Arizona. This is potentially only the fifth report for Navajo County, and there are apparently no records for adjacent Apache County. This is a large flight year for Varied Thrush in California, and above-average for Arizona.

Adult male with orange supercilium, throat, abdomen, wing bars, and edging to flight feathers contrasting with black coloration, black breast band and thick eyeline, gray crown, back, and tail, white lower abdomen and vent.
