Harris's Sparrow (Zonotrichia querula), Lower Salt River, Maricopa County

This Harris's Sparrow was found by Jay Miller on 17 January 2015 and photographed by Gordon Karre on 01 February 2015

Our largest sparrow, normal wintering range southern Great Plains, breeding range northern Canada. Rare transient and winter visitor in Arizona.

Black face and throat, large pink bill, and distinctive brownish face and white belly. Associating with a small flock of White-crowned Sparrows, and larger size apparent in the field.
