Greater Pewee (Contopus pertinax), Bushnell Tanks near Sunflower, Maricopa County

This Greater Pewee (Contopus pertinax) was found and photographed by Eric Hough on 04 March 2015

Though not found until March, this species undergoes spring migration much later in the season, indicating that this bird likely wintered at this location. Greater Pewee is casual in winter in the state, and especially away from the border canyons of southeast Arizona.

Tall pointed crest, all orange lower mandible and dark upper mandible indicate this species. The bird was also heard giving its two note "pip pip" calls, which can be heard on Eric's recording on xeno-canto here.
