Hybird Wood Duck x Mallard (Aix sponsa x Anas platyrhynchos), Gilbert Water Ranch, Maricopa County

This apparent hybrid Wood Duck x Mallard was photographed by Bernie Howe on 17 May 2015. It has been reported from this location since at least December of 2014.

On this hybrid duck, the long tail, hint of a crest, and odd bill pattern and shape are all reminiscent of a Wood Duck. Mallard as the second parent is suggested by the mostly green head, black tail coverts with paler tail, and hint of a curl on the tail feathers. The white in the plumage strongly suggests a domestic breed of Mallard was involved. Although this combination would by unlikely in the wild, waterfowl fanciers have been able to cross a variety of species, and this bird was likely bred in captivity.
