Plain-capped Starthroat (Heliomaster constantii), Portal, Cochise County

This Plain-capped Starthroat was photographed by Brandon K Percival on 24 July 2015. This is likely the individual found by Lori Conrad on 22 July; however there may be multiple birds in the area, making it very difficult to track individuals.

Rare summer visitor to SE Arizona. Becoming more regular, annual since 2007. Most records of Plain-capped Starthroat in Arizona come from the numerous feeding stations at middle elevations in the southeast region of the state, and most have occurred from late June through September. Most birds have been in wing molt possibly following the rains north to molt. Some reports may be of returning birds.

Large size, very large white malar and line behind the eye, white patch on flanks; very long bill.
