Red-necked Grebe (Podiceps grisegena), Lake Pleasant, Yavapai County

This Red-necked Grebe was found by Cindy and Kurt Radamaker on 9 January 2016 and photographed by Steve Hosmer on 10 January 2016

Casual (though increasing) migrant and winter visitor (removed from the review list in Dec 2014). This is a second county record for Yavapai County, with the first from 1996. A Red-necked Grebe was reported from the Maricopa side of Lake Pleasant last winter.

A medium sized grebe, smaller than a Western and larger than a Horned, with large mostly yellow bill, and a blocky triangular-shaped head. The cheeks are white and the black cap extends just below the eyes. The neck exhibits some slight reddish brown coloration laterally, and is whitish anteriorly and dark brown posteriorly.
