Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus), Seville G/C & Country Club, Maricopa County

This Monk Parakeet was photographed by Gordon Karre on 08 October 2016

Monk Parakeets are regularly found as escapees and have successfully established breeding colonies in several states in the U.S. They breed in colonies and build a huge colonial nest. They often construct the nest in a palm tree or on a man-made structure.

This was part of a group of four at this location. No evidence of breeding but individuals have been seen in this area in the past. Previously a small colony existed in Casa Grande and there are scattered reports in the greater Phoenix area previously.

Bright green with a long tail, and gray forehead and breast.
