This Short-tailed Hawk was found and photographed by Ed Harper on 29 July 2017

Short-tailed Hawk has been expanding its range northward and increasing in Arizona for the last several years and it has bred. Most reports are of light morph adult birds from montane forest in the southern "sky islands."

Adult or older immature with multiple generations of remiges. The tail is lightly banded with a dark sub-terminal band. The whitish throat, underparts, and wing linings contrast with the dark helmeted look to the bird. Some color to the underparts is remiscent of an adult that wintered in Tucson.
