Vermilion Flycatcher (Pyrocephalus rubinus), Zeniff Rd. (Forest Rd. 332), southwest of Dry Lake, Navajo County

This Vermilion Flycatcher was found by Eric Hough and Nick and Connie Worth and photographed by Eric Hough on 20 July 2017

Casual transient and breeder on the Colorado Plateau. This bird is still in juvenile plumage and showing a gape, so likely was fledged somewhere locally. There are previous records of possible breeding from Snowflake and Joseph City in Navajo County, and at least six prior records of the species from Navajo County.

Small flycatcher with white throat and underparts, weak dusky streaking on flanks and breast, dark mask, thin black bill, slight yellow-cream color on undertail coverts. This plumage and the gape at the base of the bill visible in the photo indicate this bird is a juvenile.
