Buff-collared Nightjar (Antrostomus ridgwayi), Warsaw Canyon California Gulch, Santa Cruz County

This Buff-collared Nightjar was photographed by Andrew Core on 30 August 2017

Third year in a row for this location and they were first found this year by Melody Kehl on March 20 and up to 4 have been reported from this location this year.

This species is a rare and irregular visitor to desert canyons close to the border, especially in areas with thornscrub, where it may be more regular than records suggest; however it does appear to be irregular in numbers from year to year and is currently on the review list.

Medium sized nightjar (note long rictal bristles) with complete, clean, bold buffy collar.
