Blackpoll Warbler (Setophaga striata), Glendale Recharge Ponds, Maricopa County

This Blackpoll Warbler was found and photographed by Tommy DeBardeleben on 01 September 2017

Blackpoll Warbler is a casual spring and rare fall vagrant to Arizona with about 25 records in all; most records are in the fall.

These photos are just barely identifiable, but they do show field marks of Blackpoll Warbler. The general structure and plumage characteristics eliminate all species but Bay-breasted Warbler, Blackpoll Warbler and Pine Warbler. Pine Warbler can be eliminated by the distinctly streaked back, and white tips on the primaries. The characteristics of this warbler that support Blackpoll Warbler over Bay-breasted Warbler are: the white undertail coverts that contrast with the greenish-yellow flanks and the streaked sides on the greenish-yellow breast.
