Grasshopper Sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum), Bonito Prairie, Apache County

This Grasshopper Sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum) was found and photographed by Eric Hough on 23 July 2017

Casual in Apache County with only a handful of migrant records. At least two singing males were present in appropriate breeding habitat and season indicative of possible local breeding. Outside of southeastern Arizona where the ammolegus subspecies breeds, the only other breeding location is in Yavapai County where the northern perpallidus subspecies breeds. It is unknown if this is an overlooked breeding location, or a rare or irruptive event.

Large head and  bill, short spiky tail, complete white eye ring, lack of a dark lateral throat stripe, dark spot on auriculars, buffy mark on supraloral, and unmarked underparts help identify this as a Grasshopper Sparrow.
