Greater Scaup (Aythya marila), Rimmy Jim Tank, Coconino County

This Greater Scaup was found and photographed by Jason Wilder on 04 November 2017

While a regular and commonly observed winter resident on parts of the Colorado River in Arizona, including within Coconino County, this species is rare statewide away from the Colorado River.

This scaup has a relatively rounded head with a peak in front of the eye, causing a downward slope toward the rear, and also a wide, robust bill with a large nail. These features indicate Greater rather than Lesser Scaup.
